Boutique London VC Fund – Investment Director

We were approached by a boutique London-based VC fund that invests on a deal-by-deal basis, serving a sophisticated LP base comprised primarily of UHNWIs. The firm works across sectors with a strong technology focus, and needed to hire an Investment Director who could demonstrate a genuine track record of successful exits.

The brief was a demanding one. London has no shortage of investment talent, but identifying professionals with proven exits rather than simply deal experience significantly narrows the field. Equally, persuading high-calibre candidates to move to a boutique structure, away from larger platforms, requires a nuanced approach and a deep understanding of what makes such an environment attractive to the right person.

Remuneration added further complexity. Carried interest structures in venture capital vary considerably, and we worked closely with the client to ensure their package was appropriately positioned to attract and retain the level of candidate they needed. We also spent considerable time with the client at the outset, helping them define the precise profile they were looking for: someone with a fine balance of origination, portfolio management, and exit experience, board-level exposure, the credibility to work closely with founders, and the temperament to thrive in a close-knit team environment.
