Asset Management Salary Benchmarking May 2026

Our 2026 Asset Management Salary Guide provides salary benchmarks and hiring insight across investment management, distribution, operations, risk and compliance. The guide draws on completed executive search assignments, active mandates and ongoing conversations with UK investment managers.

Fram Search is a UK specialist recruitment firm with a dedicated Asset Management practice, covering front office investment teams, distribution and commercial roles, middle office and investment operations, risk and compliance, and corporate support functions across traditional active managers, boutiques, alternatives platforms and institutional investors.

Key findings

  • Demand is strongest in private markets, alternatives and specialist investment firms, while broader front office and distribution hiring remains selective and risk & compliance hiring stays quiet overall.
  • Passive products continue to take share from traditional active management, increasing pressure on active managers to demonstrate differentiated process and commercial discipline.
  • Compensation expectations remain elevated following post-COVID salary inflation, but firms are increasingly selective about where increases are awarded, paying aggressively only for genuinely hard-to-replace talent.
  • Private markets hiring has become more cautious despite continued strategic interest, with greater scrutiny on valuation expertise, liquidity management and operational infrastructure.
  • Risk & Compliance hiring remains muted overall, though regulatory complexity, including Consumer Duty embedding, continues to support long-term demand for experienced professionals.

2026 Hiring Outlook

Private markets: strong.
The most active area of hiring demand, though conditions are more cautious than in earlier expansion periods.

Distribution: selective.

Middle office: selective.
Demand subdued overall, but technical, high-capability candidates continue to attract attention.

Front office: selective.
Highly dependent on strategy performance, asset flows, and business model.

Risk & compliance: quiet.
Hiring cautious overall, though regulatory expectations continue to support long-term demand.

Market overview

The UK asset management industry remains in a challenging operating environment, still working through the after-effects of the post-COVID growth surge, the subsequent slowdown and higher rate environment, ongoing geopolitical instability, and continued uncertainty around long-term market direction. Many firms have struggled to articulate a sufficiently differentiated value proposition as clients expect lower fees, stronger reporting and more consistent outcomes, placing a premium on commercial judgement across leadership teams.

Passive products continue to gain share from traditional active management, particularly where differentiation has become harder to demonstrate, increasing pressure on active managers to evidence clear investment philosophy and operational robustness. Private markets remain an area of strategic interest for many firms, though hiring within alternatives, private credit and real assets has become slower and more cautious, with greater scrutiny applied to valuation expertise, liquidity management and risk oversight.

Overall hiring activity remains relatively subdued, but demand stays concentrated around a small group of individuals and skillsets viewed as commercially valuable, operationally critical, or difficult to replace. Competition for this proven talent remains intense despite broader market caution.

Sector-by-sector Commentary

Front Office

Hiring conditions across investment teams remain highly dependent on strategy performance, asset flows and business model. Multi-strategy platforms, alternatives businesses and specialist investment firms continue to compete aggressively for proven talent capable of generating differentiated performance, while hiring elsewhere is more restrained and closely linked to succession planning and specific capability gaps.

Distribution & Commercial

Distribution functions continue to evolve under pressure around asset raising and client retention. Demand is strongest for professionals who can demonstrate measurable commercial impact rather than purely relationship-driven activity, with firms exploring new channels including digital engagement, outsourced sales models and model portfolio adoption.

Middle Office & Investment Operations

Middle office responsibilities continue to broaden, particularly at smaller and mid-sized firms where the role increasingly overlaps with operations, finance and regulatory coordination. Demand remains relatively subdued overall, though experienced individuals with strong technical capability and commercial understanding continue to attract attention, especially within private markets and alternatives businesses.

Operations

Operational hiring activity remains relatively quiet, although the importance of operational robustness continues to increase. Larger firms operate layered models combining internal infrastructure with outsourced services, sustaining demand for individuals capable of managing control frameworks, vendor relationships and escalation processes.

Risk & Compliance

Hiring across risk and compliance remains cautious overall, though Consumer Duty, governance expectations and operational resilience requirements continue to support long-term demand. The market increasingly values professionals who can balance regulatory expertise with commercial awareness and practical operational judgement.

Methodology

Fram Search's Asset Management salary benchmarking draws on active search mandates, completed placements, compensation benchmarking work, and ongoing market conversations across traditional active managers, boutiques, wealth managers, alternatives platforms and institutional investors. Figures represent estimated permanent annual base salary ranges only and exclude bonus, carried interest, deferred compensation, and other variable compensation. Most observations reflect London and South East compensation levels; levels outside major financial centres may be lower. Compensation varies significantly by firm size, strategy, AUM and individual track record, and the ranges shown are a practical benchmarking guide rather than a definitive statement of market rates.
